Sheriff's Office have drunk tank ready, elections MAY bring needed changes, something smells at the TDC (again)

The Sheriff’s Office will have their specialized units looking for YOU, IF you’re drunk driving tonight, or for the weekend. This Labor Day weekend local law enforcement will be cracking down on drunk driving and if you’re caught, there are NO BREAKS! An average drunk driving charge will cost you an easy six to seven thousand dollars by the time all the bills are paid, be smart and DON’T DRIVE DRUNK!

Now that the primaries are over one election day story that didn’t seem to make the local papers was what happened at the BVL polling location. It seems that there were people ready to vote, and people ready to work, but darn, where the heck are those oaths to sign? Seems all poll workers are required to sign the oaths but someone forgot to get them to this polling station, we’re told. To top that, one of the machines were giving the staff a particularly difficult time and they were ready to make a move that would surely have caused more problems so in steps Supervisor of Elections candidate Michael Brigmond who advised staff and actually reset the machine so it would correctly operate. As we’re told, the people couldn’t cast their votes until almost 8:15AM. Yes, we know the election is over, it’s just good to know that the modus operendi at the Elections Office continues….unphased.

[More:]

With the General Election almost in sight, their are many hopes of changes that can be made with possibly 3 new County Commissioners! One of our biggest concerns is, and has been, the TDC Advisory Board. This board needs to be COMPLETELY replaced, a new Board Chair elected, and as soon as the old members are out the door a new code of ethics needs to be adopted by the group. We say when the old members are out because, in our opinion, they’d never adopt standards that could stand in their way of doing business. Hopefully, the candidates currently running for office will tell us all BEFORE being elected that they will commit to replacing the board.

**Sniff, sniff. We heard there may be something being looked into at the TDC. Could actually be something illegal and at the very least, totally unethical. Maybe Commissioner Ken Smith can shed some light on this?

**Yes, as we stated before, the State Attorney, Lawson Lamar receives our blog every time it goes out, along with his number 2 guy, Randy Means. Maybe, just maybe we’ll get a real outside investigation?

How about we ALL have a nice, quiet, and enjoyable Labor Day Holiday? God Bless each and every one of you! Be healthy and pleae, stay safe!

You're 100% right about the TDC. I think they should go to only members with a vested interested should sit on that board. I think those that collect the Bed Tax should watch over the day to day operations and I believe they will only make decisions that will not only help their business but the entire tourist corridor. Remember, there is one on the TDC Board that is directly tied to the City of Destiny and USSSA and he has made a good chunk of change and hey Lamar if you are getting these blogs and want to fry a big fish, go to the TDC and ask that memeber who happens to be a "consultant" for these groups. Also these new Commissioners may want to look into the budget at the Attorney's Office. Their budget tends to go up while they also continue to utilize outside council to do the job of Attorney's that make over $100k per year. How about our Economic Development Department? Anyone wonder what they've really done for the residents of Osceola County? Yeah, a couple of businesses came here but there are some that say they would have come here even without a special package being given to them. These new Commissioners need to ask some serious questions and not become pals with the top three employees at the County.

You're on the money Joe! "BIG" Jim has been feasting off the citizens of this county long enough. Now that his commission connection has lost his bid to return, maybe the next Commissioner won't be as beholding to "BIG" Jim as the previous guy! In fact, all the incumbants need to wake up and realize this good old boy crap (without any real good old boys) MUST come to an end, NOW.
Carl is right about something going on with the TDC board and at least one member of the commission whose favorite organization was able to receive TDC funds! The commissioner is also employed by this organization as well.
Where the hell is Lawson Lamar???

Mistake after mistake at the Supervisor of Elections Office...what a shame...that should be the easiest constitutional office to run. Change is definitely needed there--don't know if Mary Jane Arrington is the answer but it couldn't get any worse than now.

About the TDC--unfortunately, this board has turned into a bunch of glorified wanna-be elected officials and not thinking about the tourist industry. The CVB needs to be privatized and out of government hands. Maria (I only changed my last name to Toumazos so people know I married Dimitri) has no experience running this important department. She does nothing and knows nothing...oh, but that make her perfect for the county manager's senior management team! This county is going to pot and until new commissioners change the way things done we won't see anything positive come out of this community!

Right on Joe and Larry. "Big" Jim isn't so "Big" anymore, huh? Guess Bill is drinking himself into oblivion right now--oh, yeah--like that's a surprise...wonder if he'll stop showing up at board meetings???? Not that it would matter...he didn' make any real changes in his four years anyway. The best part of his defeat is we won't have to read all those silly quotes in news articles that we KNOW he didn't write!

If you really think about it, what has "Big" Jim done for this community...not a thing! All right listen up, I will tell you what he does for a living...he brings developer money to the Commissioners non-profits. Those non-profits need the money, but so do so many other boards that don't get special treatment or have special connections.

Oh yeah, and just for the record...my name is Maria but please don't mistake me for that goof at the Economic Development Department!

I appreciate the great work Carl Cricket and staff do in keeping our citizens informed of what's really going on in our county. And, I know the KSIB staff goes the extra mile in verifying information before it's published. That's good journalism! So with that thought in mind, I want to help keep the record straight, as one comment in today's column was slightly mistated. I did not "reset" the machine (the Accuvote scanner). What I did was stop the untrained poll workers from removing the memory card. They were going to attempt to reprogram the memory card by inserting it into the encoder used to reprogram the Touchscreen cards.
So what did I get in return from the Elections office? A command by an improperly trained full time employee to place my ballot in the emergency compartment and leave the polling place immediately! Sorry, Ashley, but without taking the oath the office was not offically open. It was illegal for them to issue a ballot and it would have been illegal for me to vote.
But since Connie and Co have already broken the laws with the misprinted ballots and issuing mulitple ballots to some voters, what's one more illegal act? You would think the elections office would have thanked me for calling to report the problem, since the clerk had not yet called in. As I have stated before, even 24 years of experience cannot overcome incompetence. With the General Election coming up. Look for more of the same, maybe worse.
Where is the Justice Department when we need them?
I do want to say thank you to all who voted for me. It is greatly appreciated.

Mike does this mean you will be casting your vote for Mary Jane in November?

And why is it that there is always a problem with the BVL precincts (where the candidates that did not make it have some of their heaviest support)????? And the the poll that did not open in time stay open an extra hour and fifteen minutes to make up for the delay????

So sad.

OUT WITH THE OLD!!!

And, Jeanne, although we all ask questions from time to time like the one you just posed, I couldn't help but feel some sarcasm. I have to say, from what I could tell, Mr. Brigmond seems to be a man of integrity so I'm sure he will vote his conscience as he chooses the candidate that is best for THE VOTERS.

Mike (and Carl), did you happen to catch the picture on page A2 of Thursday's News-Gazette?

Jeanne, Voting is a sacred right that I value with my life. My vote is not for sale, nor will I cast it casually. I will protect it and place it carefully. I hope you will do the same.

In case anyone did not see A2, it shows "Will Click, son of SOE, Connie Click (Durbin), volunteering by carrying in ballots cast..." to include those for his mum (or opponent) and others. Mark Durbin, Connie's husband, was also back in the ballot area as well as Connie. There were pictures taken of Connie touching ballots, directly supervising counting/results, and once again, not providing information requested by the voting public in attendance to watch "the show."

If the silent majority wishes to stay that way, then Mrs. Durbin will f*** another of our elections and it is the voters' own fault for being so apathetic. Everyone who reads this keeps bitching about it yet I"m pretty alone on knocking on doors to do something about it. Think about that.

I am so fed up with this County. NOT picking on political parties as a whole BUT, if you're not a member of the Republican "in crowd" you get no where, most of the time, in politics. While being a Republican isn't a bad thing, being a member of the in crowd is. The Durbin family is just an example. There are the Horners, Murphys, Owens,Greers, Stones, and so on. AND, there's plenty of unmentioned names behind the scenes who make it all work for the in crowd. Their reward are contracts and favorable nods from some elected officials. Of course, my thoughts are my thoughts and certainly nothing I could prove in a court of law, but if I had subpeona power I'd sure know some good questions to ask, and then indict!

Why is Connie Durbin so afraid to use her married name? And why is her kid named Will Click instead of Durbin?

Can someone tell me why these County Commissioners fail to see how this County Manager plays the shell game and only moves money around and is mostly more interested in placing money in his pocket the whole time validating his proposed increase through letting good workers go. Hey I have a question for everyone who reads this...what are 60 County employees worth? $20k and some extra benefits. I'm sorry, am I wrong? I think the top three spots in the County should give up any increases or additional perks and I think they will earn the respect of the workers that were left behind. Our Commissioners sit in their offices with blinders on for one reason...because this Manager does what ever they say regardless who gets thrown under the bus. I know that I am not in the minority in this and I hope our new Commissioners don't fall for the County Manager's and the County Attorney's "I'm your pal" approach and truly look at what they've done to this County.

Joe Taxpayer is on the money (so to speak). I just heard the Commission Chairman pulled the item from the consent agenda in order to discuss it. I also have heard they were getting emails and calls, mostly undentified, objecting to this guy's performance and big raise.
Hopefully the majority of commissioners will have the backbone to say no to this contract and reject all raises. If not, make your list of who lives in your district and reward them next time they're up for election. Owen is next to go! He's been pushing his little projects, the HOME program and the Boys & Girls Club, sucking OUR tax dollars FROM the county and giving it away to groups who do little for OSCEOLA residents. (and just because you decided to live in the woods in Osceola County, doesn't make you an Osceola resident!)
