Jo Thacker & Kathy Wall display CLASS, County Manager shows none, When will Osceola Foundation return improper grant from TDC Mr Smith?

Today’s County Commission meeting was interesting, VERY interesting. The pay raises that were on the “Consent” agenda, were removed by Chairman Shipley and placed on the regular agenda, as they should have been in the first place!

Both Jo Thacker, the County Attorney, and Kathy Wall, the County Auditor displayed more class than anyone has in a very long time when they both requested their contracts with the County be rebewed with no salary increases. Both cited their enjoyment in working at the County level and both expressed a deep level of concern for all County residents as we ALL go through this recession period.

Commissioner Paul Owen stated he was against any raises and proposed the Manager come back in two weeks with a plan of freezing certain higher salaries for a period of up to two years. But then he also stated that he had given his word to the manager that after a year, if the job was done, he’d be given a raise.

[More:]

All this time, the manager, Freilinger, stayed absolutely quiet. Commissioner Ken Smith, who appeared to be sleeping most of the meeting spoke up against the raise and even encouraged Frielinger to give up the raise. Instead, Frielinger sat by, silently and allowed, by a 4 to 1 vote, an increase to a $206,000.00 salary! Keep in mind, his raise equals AND actually surpasses some current employee’s salaries! He does give up mileage reimbursements, along with cell phone, and a cut to his settlement package, should he leave prior to his contract ending. Still, nice job Mike, lots of class!

Meanwhile, a contract for a local Kissimmee fisherman was pulled off the agenda when a question came up regarding the advertising of the position and IF there was an RFP (request for proposal) on the item. The contract was going to have him promote Osceola County as a reat place to fish. And only for a little over $100,000.00! What a deal! Hmmmm sniff, sniff…smell the insider action?

We do need to ask the County where the new CVB “Director” came from? As far as we can find out, he’s had absolutely NO experience in the world of tourism. In fact, we’ve been told his only claim to fame are his “connections” on W 192! Prior to being POOFED into a Director, we’re told he was a Bond Attorney, and at the time, unemployed! IF this is true, should we really be gambling with our main resource, which is the tourism fringe, in these difficult economic times? Why haven’t we hired someone with experience and knowhow? We’re sure Mr Lang is a nice enough guy,(after all, he’s got W192 friends) but why does that qualify him to run our CVB? sniff, sniff…yep, you smelt it!

And finally, with the County, we’d like to ask when the Osceola Foundation will be returning money which was given, inappropriately by the TDC, to the Foundation. It is rumored that Smith says he’ll return it when asked. Doesn’t he know, or hasn’t anyone told him this “donation” was NOT legitimate?
Perhaps the State’s Attorney’s office will find this interesting. There’s more to it, including one of the members of the TDC and their position with another group. Isn’t it funny how they all seem to connect?

The Osceola Sheriff’s Office is very upset today. At approximately 11:10PM, on the 7th, some yahoo decided to rob, of all places, the Krispy Kreme on W192!! No jokes please. The bad guy got away with an unknown amount of cash and was wearing all black. He’s about 5′10, 190 pounds and did NOT take any donuts.(a relief to the responding deputies) **Sorry, couldn’t let that go!

There are rumors going around regarding a possible Federal discrimination lawsuit against the City of St Cloud possibly being filed. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out more about it.

Well, that’s it for now. Good lessons learned at the Commission meeting. The County Manager lacks the class that was displayed by Jo Thacker and Kathy Walls. We do appreciate their efforts and applaud THEIR requests NOT to receive a pay hike. Mr. Freilinger displayed something else. YOU tell us what you think. The comment pages are open again, just keep it clean!

God Bless you ALL. Be healthy and please, always stay safe!

Carl, I agree with you that the CM did not display any class at all. How disappointing that he can oly think about himself during these times. I don't agree that the auditor and attorney were admirable in there decisions to not accept a raise. If they were really classy they would never had asked for one in the first place. It wasn't until they realized they didn't have three votes to approve their raises that they changed their tunes. Also, they are going to receive cell phone and car allowances which is considered income. They also will receive a hike in retirement and deferred comp and, if county employees receive merit increases, so will they. I don't think that's classy--it's sliding under the radar! Owen was a true disappoint today--he did suggest a salary freeze--let's see if Commissioners follow up on this--if not, it was all talk as usual. John Q. doesn't deserve another term--he admitted he wasn't there to approve the original contract and STILL voted for the manager's increase. Can't blame Lame Lane for his vote--shortimer that he is, but Shipley leading the love fest...ugh...thank goodness he won't be back for another term! Surprisely enough, have to give Smith credit for not going with the flow...it' not even his election year and he did the right thing. I hope voters remember this and many other things going on at the county when it comes time to vote. We need Commissioners who will stand up for us, the taxpayers. Hopefully, when we have new commissioners the "management team" wll understand they work for taxpayers and the power will be shifted.

Well, after all, they DID promise Fellblinger (or whatever his name is) that if he do the dirty work, he would get his prize. Remember, when they chose Flatblaster (or whatever his name is) from the rest of the applicants, they made the final decision by putting all the applicants into a room and watching to see which one of them schmoozed and b.s'd the best. F***luster (or whatever his name is) was the clear winner. He's been wh**ing himself out for the boys ever since. He cares nothing about this county as evidenced by his reluctance to grow roots here. Why should he? Whenever he is done raping the taxpayers at the direction of the board, F*rtstarter (or whatever his name is) will just move on to another town at an even higher salary along with many accolades and a nice bye-bye package from his pimps. Who's fault is this? THE VOTERS. Because it is THEY who keep electing the jerks who prefer to stay fat as our working families suffer. Many of those families have adults who have never even voted let alone canvass for anyone capable of independent thought (the antithesis of Fleeflicker, or whatever his name is) to support change.

Let's hope that Lane's ousting was just the start of a major shake up but, probably not. Hawkins will probably buy his way in to show that it's always just about $$$ at the top. He's an obnoxious, brash campaigner just like Smith who now doesn't know the difference between a hamburger and a tennis racket but spoke up when Paul Owen kicked him in the shin when it was time for both of them to grandstand.

Paul, "Oh it's so bad but it hurts so good let's do it anyway" Owen is the worst of them all. He loves Flipfarker (or whatever his name is) for giving him enough of a continued cushion to place his sh**shacks all over the county, thumbing his nose at any decency the decisions from the office holds. Frontrunner (or whatever his name is) continues to run interference with the smoke screens so everyone can concentrate on the billions they'll make on Destiny followed by a nice retirement to Tennessee.

Poor Mel Welsh, who was on the news with the rest of them. Their faithful servant of many years, will be left behind to keep walking around with that sweaty cowboy had that also holds nothing capable of independent thought. Guess he has enough time on his hands to attend the Commission meeting when no one else can because they are scheduled DURING THE DAY when the rest of us have to make a living. Maybe he can now run around behind Fishsmeller (or whatever his name is) and let him use his cell phone and car that we are saving so much money on that we can afford to give Funstumper (or whatever his name is) a raise large enough to pay another human beings salary for a whole year.

Sick. This place is sick and if it continues, it is the fault of the voters.

In this meeting, was there any mention of the 4% Cost of Living Increase for the employees? According to the CM, he had requested a 4% COL increase to all employees. What happened to those who are unemployed because of the CM, that's a big slap in the face!

The manager asked for XX when he came to Osceola county. The commission said we will
give you X now and in one year if the manager took care of business he would get
XX. Economy goes south commission approves
every budget cut hence every job cut. Every item given to the manager to do he did.Deal offered, deal accepted, deal done, money given. As the guy on tv used to say,"You can pay me now or pay me later". Say Hello to "later".

Nice show today, huh? First Little Jo and Kathy become martyrs by turning down raises and that speech from Jo...classic! Okay, let me set this up for those that haven't followed this daytime soap from day one. Old County Manager gets fired for playing the "I only have to make three of them happy" game, loses and gets fired. County Attorney is asked to be interim County Manager which she gladly accepts. After a few weeks the County Commissioners vote to give Jo a "temporary" pay increase for her added responsibilities. Her number two also gets a "temporary" raise for being the Acting County Attorney. New County Manager comes on-board basically handpicked by who? The interim County Manager. Interim County Manager (Jo) goes back to her old job along with her second in command but did their pay ever go back to what it was before their interim status? I don't think so. So is Jo the martyr she claimed to be? No. Then there is Kathy who I actually like but lets not forget not to long ago she received a huge raise to bring her up or comparable to other County Auditors within the State. This even though her office missed or overlooked years of mis-spending over at the CVB. Yes, she should have caught this long before the media. Now our great "he can walk on water" County Manager. Are they kidding? Acting as if this County owes him something and the whole it wouldn't be fair not to give him a little something or he is so underpaid as far as County Managers go but has anyone asked him how much of a pay increase he received over his old job including the perks? They also failed to mention his request for a lump sum deposit into his retirement plain. Was that dropped? I think even though they removed his car allowance he may be able to submit reimbursement for mileage. Not 100% sure if that is the case but the Chairman wasn't giving the whole package which I think was very decieving on his part. Hats off to Commissioner Smith for going on the record regarding giving the County Manager a chance to witdraw his request but he only went forward with his request because he knew Jo and Kathy already got theirs and weren't losing anything. I think Owen trying to push for the top Executives to not get a pay raise for the next two years was a good thing. Some of the top Executives recieved nice raises when promoted or when they came onboard from their old jobs not to mention the increase in their retirement plan which included all the County Attorneys which still doesn't sit well with me. If I am wrong just let me know and I will be happy to debate but I'm here and know the truth as I've seen it. Also, watch Ch. 9 and see how four of our County Commissioners lied about how poor our County Manager is compaired to other County Managers/Admindistrators in Central Florida. Oh yeah, one more thing...what is up with whatever you guys say Johnny "Q". He should go in two years.

One more thing, AK4747...you're killing me. Just too funny! Too bad things turned out the way they did. It is a sad day in Osceola. What would Chief Osceola have done? Some of these Commissioners should know, they went to school with him. Hint, hint. Out with the old and in with the new!

This county manager had the opportunity to join the Osceola Community, despite the alleged "promises" of the County Commission, by turning down the raise as the two ladies id. By the way, they did not ask for a raise, it was put in to their contract by HR.
Instead, the manager decided someone else's salary was more important for HIM to collect it rather than someone else. His raise, almost $30,000.00, is higher than many current county employees' salaries. Of course that doesn't count the Peaches, the HR director, the TDC/CVB alleged Director, and so on.
To get change, you/WE must vote it in. If Mr Hawkins isn't the guy to make changes, out he should go, just like Lane. BUT, the same needs to be for John (whatever you guys decide) Quinones, Ken Smith, and Paul Owen. Shipley is already leaving.
While I don't believe Mike Harford will do much, (heck, he isn't even campaigning very well, at least it will be someone different there.
We need the same at the school board, unless you believ the bulloney from Wheeler.

Arrington as bad as Mckinnon? Now that's a stretch! give him a chance or call him on the phone like I did to ask his thoughts on issues. He has lots of logical yet innovative ideas. Ask other candidates running for office their ideas as well. Guess what? Most of them don't have any ideas. The same BS: lower taxes, smarter growth, more jobs, etc. They don't say HOW they are going to do it though.
Voters- please do your homework, check out all our options for November. Go to the candidates websites look up their phone number and call them. Anyone can "prepare" a statement for a debate or appearance. Call a candidate on his cell or home phone and catch him or her off guard and find out their REAL answers. We are in desperate need of a new direction and I truly believe we can achieve it-thank you

Larry,

Strictly out of curiosity, what makes you feel that Mike is "not campaigning very well?" He has already had 4 community/townhall events and 3 of those were before the primary (even though he didn't have to go through a primary)...??

Anyway, there is a round of League of Women Voter debates coming up as well as, possibly, some other debates (actual debates, not dog and pony forums). Jeanne is right. People need to get to know the candidates better. Call them at home and/or see them out at, preferably, non-chamber functions ('cause that's just fluff). Maybe if folks are a little better educated on for whom they are voting, they won't "go thru the drive thru and get miles away before they realize: THAT'S NOT MY FISH SAMMMICH!!"

Ciao!

This is just another fine example of why we need Fred Hawkins. The ciitizens spoke and got rid of Bill Lane, which was needed. Fred Hawkins will be the man for the District 5.

We need to feel sorry for the employees that were layed off. Hopefully they are doing well and not facing hard times.

This is just another fine example of why everyone should vote and look into the person who is running for the position.

I must say that I have called Fred Hawkins on several issues and he ALWAYS answers my calls. Any citizen who would like to speak to Fred Hawkins on any issue should visit his website www.fredhawkins2008.com and give him a call. Fred is the most down to earth person I have ever met.

Please support Fred Hawkins!!!!!!!!!!

AK,
I have a friend who resides very near where Mr Harford resides. The neighbors in that area have heard very little from him. Perhaps he believes he already has their votes since he's from the neighborhood, but he shouldn't. Actually, now that you made me "think", that's all I heard. I do remember the last time he ran and his campaign was very a poor effort. I just hope he's made changes.
As a taxpayer whose right to vote for ALL County Commissioners was stolen away from me by an Orange County resident and Federal judge, I am now at the mercy of others to choose my representatives. I only hope they will come out to vote!
This is indeed a time for true CHANGE!!

AK, You must NOT have gone to an Osceola School because your math is excellant!! Imagine now, if you will, as Fred is elected to the Commission and we then have Ken Smith, employee of Osceola Foundation AND Fred Hawkins, Foundation Board member on the same 5 person County Commission.
Couple that with Paul Owen AND John Q who are tightly connected to the Boys Club and both are trying to build a Club in BVL through donations, no doubt solicited by either of the Commissioners, at county board meetings, OR connected to them.
Okay my friend AK. Now add ALL of them together and see what answers you come up with. The best I can come up with is CONFLICTS of interests, possible openess to Sunshine violations, possible openes to corruption, well, you get the picture.
ANYTHING is possible with that scenerio. And I'll wager the voters will put them right in to office!
Unless Mike Harfod gets off his butt and starts working for what he claims he wants!

Daryl,
What does "besides, he lives in the city" mean? No city residents should be xonsidered because of that? How silly a comment to make. And, it's those types of comments which question your ability to make an itelligent vote based on issues, rather than where the candidate resides!
I only hope your other brother Daryl is more open minded!

Daryl, your "logic" is part of the problem here. "Because Harrell LIVES IN THE CITY" is a strike against him?! Oh God. The last time I checked, St. Cloud is part of Osceola County. And, a major complaint of the governments is lack of willingness or ability to WORK TOGETHER. When you split things up, you get what we have now: factions working against each other, a constant tug of war. There is definitely not enough joint/team planning done here. This is why our citizens are now struggling with things like irresponsible growth which has led to forclosures, etc. Harrell being a city resident should be a bonus for voters. He has the experiences of the best (and worst) of both worlds in these very difficult times. Even I can see that and I am NOT on his campaign team, by the way! Sheesh!

Larry and others, if you look at people like Ken Smith's campaign reports, you will see yet another sick angle to how these asses have totally lost their perspective as public servants. Ken and others are what I call "perpetual politicians." Paul, Ken and others' contributions are from entities like the developers who also make a simultaneous contribution to these guys' "favorite charities." The "favorite charities" then turn around and give the politicians things like golf tournaments passes, etc. The politician shows up in "support," and gets more contributions from individuals who own or have a stake in the businesses or charities. The politician continues the plug the charity through as long as they are "beholding" to the politician in other ways like continuing to help funnel money back to the politicians' coffers. It's legal how they do it, usually (but NOT always) on paper. But, moral or ethical? Well, now here we are to what is a big piece of what I have noticed about Candidate Harford's and Candidate Harrell's platforms and a true need in Osceola: ETHICS REFORMS (hopefully to include campaign finance but I'm not sure it can at least under how a commissioner legislates regarding county issues).

I know Mike Harford wants to have developers register as lobbyists when doing business here. The idea is extremely interesting and enticing, how he is laying it out. These are the issues and discussions we need to be having to turn this ship around before it sinks completely on the working man and woman!

He also told many people he was resigning from the Foundation. That isn't done either! He didn't keep his word to Bill Lane either. I'm just wondering if he's NOT doing what he promises now, how badly will he screw us once he's on the Commission with Ken Smith and gang?

I must have missed someting did the Manager come in to cut jobs?

Is this what buisness that is being referred to, or that he is just doing a great job?

Is it interesting that the two asked not to recieve there raises.

Did the one that was acting county manager go back to her salary when she went back to her postion after the manager came in, or was that also slipped under the radar?

Oh well Politics is Politics the lesser of the two evils!!!!!

AK4747 you are starting to sound like Fred Hawkins supporters except you are doing the same with Harford. Mike does have some good ideas, but the people need to hear them. He almost put the League of Women Voters asleep on Thursday when he was speaking. He also came across as an over confident cadidate with a chip on his shoulder. I'm not a fan of Owen but Harford was making faces and pouting when Owen was speaking. Mike almost thru a temper tantrum when he was asked to speak first. He felt the incumbent should go first and not proceed alphabetically. Don't assume the prize is yours Mike, stay on your game and go out and reach your Independent voters. I'm not decided yet on who is the best candidate for the job.
