Convention Center Approved, No leak in Landfill! No workfarce presentation,Commissioner Harford's honeymoon over already?Paul Owen's last(hopefully) act of defiance to voters/taxpayers!

The so called workforce project, now called Signature Crossing, was NOT presented for discussion at today’s County Commission meeting. Further, all five County Commissioners agreed it would NOT be discussed or presented on the 17th, next week’s meeting as there are more than enough items for that agenda and the County Manager’s office has not yet received any official request to be on any future county agenda. A certain amount of paperwork is required to be submitted along with the request and none of that has happened as of this afternoon!

The project was first brought up by many residents/taxpayers who spoke during the first citizens forum and all spoke against the apartment projects.

During the Commissioner’s time, Ken Smith brought up the projects saying he just wanted fairness in allowing the item on to the agenda. He admitted he thought it was slated for the 17th, but the Manager stated he had received no such request. As each Commissioner spoke, they all agreed it should be given a fair hearing, but also said they believed it should come before the new Commission, to be seated in two weeks. Chairman Shipley stated, before hitting the gavel, that all 5 have stated the item should come up at a future date, but NOT the 17th. Looks like we’ll just have to watch the future agendas for when it will be before the Commission.

One item we forgot to mention in the last blog was that there is no leak in the Holopaw landfill! We received an email from Fred Hawkins who told us this has been a rumor for the past few weeks. He said the facility is inspected quite often and the soils are tested and there is absolutely NO leaks or damage to the landfill’s liner! Good news and we appreciate Mr Hawkins straightening this out for us.

[More:]

The much talked about Convention Center received approval and it does appear that this may actually work out for the County, especially the County taxpayers! It was repeated a few times that absolutely NO ad valorum funds, or any taxpayer monies would be spent on the project. TDC money will assist to the tune of several million dollars, however, everyone is confident the Osceola taxpayers will NEVER have to pay towards this project. Good deal.

While the slot had remained open for a few weeks, Paul Owen, knowing full well he would not be returning to office, took what we hope was his last swing at the citizens of Osceola County and re-appointed Big Jim Murphy who lacks the class to resign from the TDC. This act of defiance is an example of what is wrong with some politicians and we hope there’s a way for Mr. Harford to correct that appointment by releasing Mr Murphy and appointing someone else. Mr Murphy has clearly NOT been a community leader in the way the TDC has been run under his chairmanship. Also, while we believe Paul Owen is a nice guy, he disappointed many, many citizens this afternoon!

We’ve heard that Commissioner elect Mike Harford had a bit of a disagreement with some staffers regarding the swearing in to his office. Seems that he wanted his swearing in to be held outside in the Square so ALL citizens would be able to view the ceremony. In fact, we’re told it went so far that he allegedly was demanding that it be done his way. He was advised, we’re told, that he was not a Commissioner yet and could not demand anything of staff. Further, if he decided not to attend the swearing in ceremony INSIDE the building, the Governor’s Office might be notified to place the seat back up for special election! Could this possibly have happened? We’ll believe that there may have been a misunderstanding and leave it at that. You know how rumors go!

It was good to see the many people who attended the Commission meeting today. Even Billy Newman attended and voiced his objections to the Signature Crossing housing projects. We hope even more people will email, telephone, and attend the meeting this item is finally up before the Commission. $1.7 million is a lot of jobs, a lot of money, and a lot of other people will be making fistfulls of money, like the developer, Jonathan Wolf. The project needs to be stopped!

Until next time, God Bless you all. Be healthy, and please be safe!

Geesh. All the work up and Wheeler didn't even know it wasn't being presented! He's still a goofball.

Paul Owen, after appointing Murphy, should NEVER, EVER be elected to another post in Osceola County. Time for him to leave the county and move back up North. He's sucked this county dry enough!

Ken Smith, I'm sorry to say, has become another liar like his buddy Tom Greer. Ken needs to resign and just go away.

I do not know what happened with Harford, but the swearing in is just a formality. It has no bearing on whether you are a commissioner or not. What does have bearing is your certification of election that you have to purchase for $10.00 from Tallahassee. I do not know who all the citizens are that want to come see Harford. There has always been plenty of room in the chambers for everyone who wanted to come. One of the biggest was when Q won. Many more people from the Hispanic community came out because it was a historic event.

As for threatening to put the seat back up for special election, that is something you cannot do. If the seat were to be deemed open, the Governor would appoint. There would be a special election to fill the remaining two years of office to coincide with the November 2010 election.

Under the rules of the County Charter even when Hartford is sworn in he can not direct staff to do any thing. His only direct reports are the manager, attorney and auditor. In fact many years ago the Commission put in place a rule that any direction to them needed to be done in a board meeting if it required a lot of time and effort. Sounds like Hartford needs to keep his day job and is wants to do everything after 6 pm. Keep directing staff Hartford and see where that lands you, this isn't the school board baby. Had Hartford ever spent any time in a Commission meeting or done his research on the policy and rules he would know these things, but heck he didn't do that on the school board. As to Murphy, I'll bet he resigns around the first of the year. As to the Workforce Housing, I don't think the new board will pass the item. I watched the meeting and noticed the Chjairman did not state any support for the project by him.
Well we wanted change, so in one more meeting three new ones will be on the dias, we get what we wish for.

Who do you think will be the next commission chairman? With 3 new ones, will it be Smith or Q? Who would be worse?

Smith will NOT be Chairman. It's between Q and Hawkins, with Hawkins having a slight edge because he speaks much better and clearer. That is NOT a swipe at Q, but just the facts. Hawkins was Chair at the Planning Commission and did a great job! He'll do it again at the Commission. If the two new guys work with him, they'll get their shot. In 4 years Lane never got closer than Vice Chair. And so it goes!
My money is on Hawkins.

Right away you pick on John Q because he is Hispanic. You overlook the very fact that he is very qualified to lead this Commission.
Because he speaks another language and doesn't speak English very well, you are prepared to pass over him and look to another to be Chairman.

WE will sue if John Q is not selected as Chairman as it is not only his turn, but it is his right. Perhaps we'll need to approach the Judicial syatem to look in to having elected County Chairmen.

Agreed.

Quiñones has an accent, but he speaks and writes English fluently. Accent and fluency: two totally different things that many people overlook, or just confuse.

Quiñones knows what he is doing, and he is no more or less qualified than Hawkins or grampa Smith, who really should not be chairman, because...Well, I'm not even going to go there.

Armando- The 5 new commissioners decide who will be chairman, not you. After the swearing in they will meet to decide, not you. While I believe John Q. is very qualified, the commissioners decide, not I and not you. Just as long as it is NOT KEN SMITH. SMITH does NOT vote for the citizens best interest.

Ken Smith is Brandon Arrington's mentor. Arrington will probably vote for Smith. Harford will probably go along. Ken Smith will be the new chairman.

I think Hawkins will vote for Smith, too because of the Foundation connection. Then Q will put the icing on the cake. Ken Smith for chairman.

Mr. Cricket..
As to the Chairmans statement about when the item should be on the agenda, he stated that there were three that thought it should be on an agenda in the future, not the 17th. The Chair and John Q. did not state it needs to be heard.

Armondo,
The world does not move for you, neither does Osceola County or me. All you do is sue or threat to sue, go get a life.
John Q will be the Chair and that will be decided by the five board memebers not an outside commissioner want a be.

I received an email about this meeting today. (Carl, you probably know what email I'm talking about.) These emails are always spot on. I don't have time to go to all these meetings and between the emails and your blog, I get the truth. That housing project is just tax money for the education foundation.

Calm down Armando. I think John Q is a politician as good as any. He just happens to be a person that takes forever to get to his point, which many politicians do regardless of their accent, ethnicity, etc. Meetings go on for hours now, if John Q ran the meetings they would double in length. Although I think Smith should go ahead and resign and go home, I think it would be a mistake to elect John Q as Chairman for the simple fact that we already burn too much staff time in those ^%$#@ meetings, if they get any longer many of us won't get anything done on Mondays!!!

If Jay Wheeler was to become the next Chair of the School Board, new or not, the members who would vote for the pompous ass would serve one term, only! The people of Osceola are developing long memories and would never forget such a bonehead move!

Joe the Plumber: Obviously Smith and Hawkins are connected to the foundation since they are board memebers, but where can I look up and see the Arringtons connected to the Foundation?

The swearing in is not a formality. It is required by the Florida Constitution.Mike didn't ask the ceremony be moved outside to the front of the old courthouse he demanded it. Not a great way to start off your career as a county commissioner. When he is in office the first legislation he can sponsor is alternate ways for the commission to take the Oath of Office to break the 100 year old tradition. It's all about Change.
