Presentation on “Making Natives Work: Designing Home Landscapes”

Posted on | March 11th, 2010 |  by in General

On Mar 18th Mark L. Johnson, MLA, will be making a presentation on “Making Natives Work: Designing Home Landscapes”. Johnson, a registered landscape architect, is a leader in sustainable design and development efforts throughout Central Florida. He was instrumental in the publication of the Florida Chapter ASLA publication “Visions of Smart Growth and Sustainability”; has served on regional Smart Growth bodies; serves on the Board of Directors of the Orlando area’s Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge; and also serves as our current Florida Native Plant Society-Pine Lily Chapter President. This presentation will provide some design theory and tricks that can bring more unity and harmony to an otherwise “wild” landscape.”

The purpose of the Florida Native Plant Society is to promote the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the native plants and native plant communities of Florida. Its members are people from all walks of life who love Florida, and all are welcome. We are a growing coalition of educators, naturalists, botanists and other scientists, land managers, landscapers, and home gardeners.

The Pine Lily Chapter is an umbrella chapter covering Osceola County and is non-profit.

We meet at the First United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 101 W. Dakin Av, Kissimmee FL 34741, at 6:30 p.m. on the third
Thursday of each month except December.

Learn the joy and value of gardening with native plants in an educational and social forum. Program are free and change monthly.

Visitors always welcome!

We will be informing you of up-coming craft events – shows, classes, guild events, etc., along with crafty hints and tips.

Feeling the need for a quilt show to shake off the post-holiday blues? Time to head for Punta Gorda for the “Gathering of Quilts” show Friday, February 26 from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday, February 27 from 9 am to 4 pm. It's being held at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center, 75 Taylor Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. There will be demonstrations, door prizes, a merchant mall, special exhibits, antique quilts on display, and much more. The show is presented by Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild, Inc. There is a donation of $6.00. For more information, contact either Joan Balmer at 941-276-1647 or Peg Nederveld at dpqg@yahoo.com. Hope to see you there.

If you love patchwork, but are not into the “quilting” part, contact Sue Feeney at The Quilted Touch at 407-846-6325. She will take very good care of you and your quilts!

When you handsew, if you pull your thread through beeswax – available at quilt and fabric stores – it helps keep your thread from tangling. This does seem to work whether you are hand quilting (yes, some people do still hand quilt!) or hemming a pair of pants.

More on Into the Garden Quilt Show presented by Ladies of the Lakes Quilter's Guild. The show will be held March 5-6, 2010 (Friday & Saturday) at The Imperial Swan Hotel, 4141 South Florida Avenue, Seventh Floor, Lakeland, FL. Admission is $5.00. Visit www.LadiesoftheLakes.com for more details on how to enter your quilts.

Also – check out your favorite quilt shop this week. Many will be having clearance sales to cut down on the inventory count! In particular, Lillie's Quilting Loft in St. Cloud has all regulary priced fabric on the bolt on sale, in addtion to other specials. These specials will be available December 29 & 30. Don't forget that the clearance fabrics are in the back of the shop!

One of the most basic tips that I can't emphasize enough is – always close your rotary cutter when you set it down. Just one wrong move and you can end up in the emergency room, and you can't sew in there – what a waste of time. (And remember to keep your fingers out of the way when you cut.)

Ladies of the Lakes Quilter's Guild will be presenting Into the Garden Quilt Show Friday & Saturday March 5 & 6, 2010. There will be vendors, door prizes, a quilt for raffle and much more. Contact their website: www.Ladiesof theLakes.com for more information. More details later.

If you are a cross-stitcher and would like to stitch with a group, stop by Needlecraft World at 4151 West Vine Street in Kissimmee (just east of “Marker 15”). The shop is open late on Mondays and Tuesdays for an old-fashioned “Stitch-In”. Call 407-933-5955 for details. The shop carries needlework kits and supplies. You can also have your latest creation mounted and framed. Even if you do not cross stitch, it's worth stopping by to see the samples that Cathy has hanging all over the shop – it will feed your creativity.

Tip of the week: To give your fabric a little more “body”, try ironing with spray starch before cutting your pieces. And – to get the perfect “scant” quarter inch seam, use the quarter inch presser foot that goes with your machine.
